The Bride stands to the Left

In most western weddings, the bride always stands to the groom’s left. Why is that? Well, way back when bachelors kidnapped their brides, grooms had to defend themselves against other suitors, as well as any of the bride’s angry family members. It made sense then to have the bride stand away from the groom’s sword hand–usually his right–lest anyone challenge him.

Of course, not all ethnic groups follow this custom. In Jewish weddings, for example, the bride stands to the groom’s right.
